Real Madrid climbed back to the top of La Liga with a 3-1 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu, led by a brace from Vinícius Júnior and a late goal from Kylian Mbappé.
The win came as a strong response following last week’s derby defeat, pushing Madrid two points clear at the top of the table.
The first half ended goalless despite Madrid dominating possession, but the breakthrough came early in the second half when Vinícius cut inside and fired a deflected shot into the net.
In the 69th minute, Vinícius doubled the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled inside the box. Villarreal briefly reignited hope as Georges Mikautadze pulled one back with a low drive from the edge of the area.
Their momentum faded soon after when defender Santiago Mourino received a second yellow card and was sent off. Real Madrid capitalized on the advantage, with Mbappé adding a third goal in the 80th minute following a quick exchange with Brahim Díaz.
Villarreal showed flashes of threat in the first half, with Tani Oluwaseyi forcing a strong save from Thibaut Courtois, but struggled to maintain pressure as the game progressed.
Mbappé later came off with a slight ankle concern but not before scoring his ninth league goal of the season. Coach Xabi Alonso praised Vinícius for his performance, calling him “decisive” and highlighting his energy and determination.
With the victory, Real Madrid move to 21 points, reclaiming first place in the La Liga standings as their title charge continues.
