At least 11 injured in stabbing attack at Michigan Walmart, suspect in custody
At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, according to authorities.
Law enforcement confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the attack.
Munson Medical Center, a nearby hospital, reported treating all 11 victims, adding on social media that their Emergency Department was facing a higher-than-normal patient volume. According to local media, three of the victims were undergoing surgery.
Videos shared online show a heavy police and ambulance presence in the Walmart parking lot.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office confirmed it is investigating what it described as “a multiple stabbing incident at the Walmart in Traverse City.”
Sheriff Michael Shea stated that the suspect, a Michigan resident, used a folding-style knife during the attack. He added that the incident appeared to be a random act of violence.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents are on-site to support the local response.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she is in contact with law enforcement about the “horrible news,” offering her thoughts to the victims and the community “reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
Traverse City is located roughly 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
