Kabul — Senior diplomats from Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan gathered in Kabul this week for a trilateral dialogue aimed at strengthening regional cooperation.
At the center of discussions was the potential expansion of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan — a move that could deepen trade links across South and Central Asia. Officials also addressed strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul, along with regional security concerns.
Beijing, which has heavily invested in the Belt and Road Initiative, is increasingly positioning itself as a mediator in regional disputes. Analysts say China’s involvement reflects both its economic interests and its desire for greater stability along its borders.
While all three sides voiced optimism about boosting connectivity and development, challenges remain. Rising militant violence in Afghanistan and long-standing distrust between Islamabad and Kabul could complicate progress.
Despite these hurdles, the meeting signals a renewed effort to find common ground. For China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan alike, closer cooperation could bring both economic opportunities and geopolitical influence in a shifting regional landscape.
